Optimism and Decay in the Southern Gothic Faulker and OConnor - Literature Essay Samples

In a certain Nobel Prize acceptance speech delivered in Stockholm in 1950, William Faulkner famously declines to accept the end of man. Elaborating, Faulkner goes on to promise that â€Å"man will not merely endure: he will prevail.† This faith, he insists, has its roots in the human soul, â€Å"a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance,† and Faulkner’s speech rings to a triumphant close in a lilting paean of polysyndentous optimism, affirming man by calling upon â€Å"the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past.† This, from the author who – perhaps more than any other – epitomized the southern Gothic genre, is surprising. The champion of a literary tradition unapologetically characterized by decay and disintegration seems, in his fiction, fairly willing to accept the end of man. This conflict between hope and despair, endurance and decay, forms one of the most fundamental tensions in American modernism. Faced with the absurdity of a post-war world, American literature – its writers and its characters – pushes forward into the realist tradition that became a hallmark of literary modernism. However, these modernist attempts to cope with an absurd reality remain haunted by the idea of universal truth, and thus plagued by a desire to return to an earlier romantic tradition. Attempting to venture into realism but unable to cope with its abject lack of universal truth, American literature is suspended between the real and romantic, warping into a grotesque caricature of itself. In this way, the southern Gothic genre emerges almost accidentally out of this tension between romanticism and realism, past and present, universal truth and the absurd. Looking at two canonical texts from the southern Gothic tradition, Faulkner’s â€Å"A Rose for Emily† and Flannery O’Connor’s â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find,† I analyze the ways in which these texts grapple with this conflict, arguing that their ultimate inability to overcome it results in the grotesque. Like their authors, torn between the traditions of the romantic and realist modes, the characters in these texts are repeatedly drawn towards the past in search of universal truth. In the same speech, Faulkner issues a call for a return to â€Å"the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed – love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.† However, for both Faulkner and O’Connor, it is this attempt to return to an earlier state of being that ultimately damns the characters to their grotesque demise. In â€Å"A Rose for Emily,† narrative time is fractured, thwarting traditions of linear chronology and leaving instead a kind of patchwork quilt of fragmented reality. The collective first person narration of the story suggests a kind of mass, communal rejection of linear time, echoed in the narrator’s account of the misplaced recollections of the old men, â€Å"confus ing time with its mathematical progression, as the old do, to whom all the past is not a diminishing road but, instead, a huge meadow which no winter ever quite touches, divided now by the narrow bottle-neck of the most recent decade of years† (Faulkner 497). This rejection of the progression of time and the desperation to return to an earlier state manifest in the grotesque in Emily Grierson. Her deranged attempt to uncover and preserve the universal truths that Faulkner suggests are alive in an earlier state jar with the physical realities of time, and result inevitably in literal decay. Meanwhile, a desire to resurrect the past also serves as the catalyst for the ultimate demise of O’Connor’s characters. In â€Å"A Good Man is Hard to Find,† the characters are led to the site of their downfall by a sudden whim of the grandmother to visit an old plantation from her childhood. Like the old men in â€Å"A Rose for Emily,† the grandmother is ultimately mistaken in her recollections, and her realization that the plantation is actually in a different state altogether ultimately propels the family towards their ironic demise. Thus, despite Faulkner’s call to return to â€Å"the old universal truths,† characters who answer this call are inevitably doomed for their efforts. For Faulkner, this conflict between the old and the new parallels a tension between the spiritual and the physical, quietly ushering â€Å"A Rose for Emily† towards its jarring conclusion. The story’s Gothic heroine is so desperate to cling to the spiritual that she attempts to preserve it through the physical. This conflict results in literal decay, lending the story its bizarre, jarring conclusion. Of the decaying corpse, the narrator notes, â€Å"The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him† (Faulkner 497). Here, Faulkner illustrates the physical reality of death overpowering spiritual forces of love. Unable to cope with the abject realities of the physical world, Emily attempts to blend them, and the result is horrific cacophony. Trying to hold onto spiritual truth in a world that ultimately has none to offer, Emily grants the otherwise rea listic story one of the most iconic images of the grotesque in the southern Gothic genre. The corpse in the story, in such a state of decay that it has â€Å"become inextricable from the bed in which it lay† emerges at the story’s conclusion as a grotesque manifestation of the abortive attempts in American literature to reconcile a need for spiritual truth with a world utterly devoid of any but empty, physical reality. O’Connor’s realism is similarly adulterated and rendered grotesque by her attempts to uncover and establish universal truth through the revelation of the spiritual in the physical world. While Faulkner, through Emily, searches for a secular truth, O’Connor attempts to fight the absurdity of a fallen world with religion. It is this search for the spiritual itself, as well as its lack of fruition, that not only gives birth to The Misfit, but simultaneously disrupts O’Connor’s realism, leaving instead another grotesque monument to the southern Gothic. The Misfit emerges in the text as an embodiment of the disillusioned modernist who, faced with an abject lack of meaning in the world, adopts a kind of moral nihilism. The Misfit maintains that he has no recollection of what his initial crime was, while also insisting his imprisonment was not a mistake. From this, The Misfit dissolves into nihilism, insisting that â€Å"the crime don’t matter. You can do one thing or you can do another, kill a man or take a tire off his car, because sooner or later you’re going to forget what it was you done and just be punished for it† (O’Connor 19). For The Misfit, the abject, meaningless order of the universe renders all acts equally punishable, and therefore no act – including murder – worthy of abstinence. However, The Misfit diverges from realism’s traditional modernist, as his universe is not one informed by the hallmark atheism of the modernist tradition, but rather by a somewhat obscure theolo gical argument. The Misfit blames Jesus for the lack of order in the world, insisting that â€Å"He thrown everything off balance.† According to The Misfit, the idea of Jesus, whether real or not, condemns man to an abject state: â€Å"If He did what He said, then it’s nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He didn’t, then it’s nothing for you to do but enjoy the few minutes you got left the best way you can – by killing somebody or burning down his house or doing some other meanness to him. No pleasure but meanness,† (O’Connor 21). For The Misfit, the spiritual truth that O’Connor offers as a path to salvation in an abject world is in fact the very cause of the problem it proposes to fix. In his search for universal truth through Christ, The Misfit buckles under the tension between the need to find spiritual significance and the world’s inability to offer any, warping into the storyâ€⠄¢s grotesque villain while the rest of the narrative likewise descends into grotesque and caricature. In both stories, the characters’ obsession with uncovering and preserving a universal truth is what ultimately ushers them towards their grotesque demise, pulling their narratives into the warped depths of the southern Gothic. Unable to cope with a meaningless world, the characters and their respective narratives desperately strain to unite realism with earlier illusions of romantic truth. Incompatible, these attempted fusions of romance and realism inevitably buckle and warp, leaving in their wake the decaying landscape of the southern Gothic. Just as the characters in the stories are drawn irresistibly towards the past, their writers, too, struggle to embrace modern realism, calling back repeatedly to old romantic traditions that ultimately only result in jarring cacophony with modern realism. Amidst the hallmark decay and disintegration that epitomize the genre, it is easy to accuse southern Gothic writers of cynicism. However, as Faulkner and O’Connor illustrate, however unwittingly, it is not cynicism that propels their works to their abject conclusions, but rather unrelenting optimism. Faulkner is unable to cope with the state of the modern world, and instead repeatedly appeals to the illusory â€Å"universal truths† of the past, just as O’Connor and her characters cling to ideas of salvation that are ultimately incompatible with reality. Though Faulkner champions â€Å"the old verities and truths of the heart† as the savior of writing and of man, it is in fact this very perseverance, this very inability to accept â€Å"the end of man† that leaves both literature and its characters in a perpetual state of decay, grotesque monuments in the graveyard of the southern Gothic landscape. What Is a Mole in Chemistry

A mole is simply a unit of measurement. Units are invented when existing units are inadequate. Chemical reactions often take place at levels where using grams wouldnt make sense, yet using absolute numbers of atoms/molecules/ions would be confusing, too. Like all units, a mole has to be based on something reproducible. A mole is the quantity of anything that has the same number of particles found in 12.000 grams of carbon-12. That number of particles is Avogadros Number, which is roughly 6.02x1023. A mole of carbon atoms is 6.02x1023 carbon atoms. A mole of chemistry teachers is 6.02x1023 chemistry teachers. Its a lot easier to write the word mole than to write 6.02x1023 anytime you want to refer to a large number of things. Basically, thats why this particular unit was invented. Why dont we simply stick with units like grams (and nanograms and kilograms, etc.)? The answer is that moles give us a consistent method to convert between atoms/molecules and grams. Its simply a convenient unit to use when performing calculations. You may not find it too convenient when you are first learning how to use it, but once you become familiar with it, a mole will be as normal a unit as, say, a dozen or a byte. Converting Moles To Grams One of the most common chemistry calculations is converting moles of a substance into grams. When you balance equations, youll use the mole ratio between reactants and reagents. To do this conversion, all you need is a periodic table or another list of atomic masses. Example: How many grams of carbon dioxide is 0.2 moles of CO2? Look up the atomic masses of carbon and oxygen. This is the number of grams per one mole of atoms. Carbon (C) has 12.01 grams per mole.Oxygen (O) has 16.00 grams per mole. Even children whose fathers pay substantial child support are faced with limiting experiences. Children hate divorce because having two of the most important people in your life living apart hurts. For children, divorce is not a one time event, but a continued process. This is a traumatic experience for the children because it leaves them feeling alone, as if nobody in the world cares about them. Single parenting affects each child differently according to that childs age. Infants and young children can feel abandoned by the decision of parents to get divorced. Most infants and young children need to feel, hear, and see both parents in order to bond with their parents. This bond is important for their parent/child relationship later in the childs life. Parenting is difficult at this age because this young child requires great amounts of nurturing. Single parents dont have time to give the proper nurturing because they are forced to work and take care of the household duties alone and therefore become extremely stressed because they worry about their children getting enough of their attention. Preschool aged children need a daily schedule. They have certain times for naps, lunch, dinner, and play. They like their certain toys, certain spots on the rug, certain people, and certain television shows. In the book, Growing Up With Divorce by Niel Kalter, he states that, an inconsistent daily schedule can cause distress in preschool age children in much the same way as it does in infants and toddlers (136). Parents need to maintain the daily schedule. This is most difficult for the parent who does not have primary custody of the child. The non custodial parent must try to accomplish a schedule of their own, that must include the needs and wants of the child. Depending on the work situation of this parent, it can be a quite difficult task. Preschool age children can develop stress reactions when they dont live with their non custodial father. The novel Hard Times Paper In the novel Hard Times, Mrs Sparsit is the housekeeper for the very outspoken Mr Bounderby, who is always talking about how self made he is although throughout the book he story alters a bit to fit the mood of the particular chapter. Mrs Sparsit is not portrayed, as you would expect a housekeeper to be portrayed. The connotations of her job have no similarities to her personality. Mrs Sparsit herself has had trouble in the past, although she had the status of an upper class female she lost her status in society due to debts her husband left her with. Mrs Sparsit married Mr Sparsit but when he got addicted to gambling he got into so much debt that he ended up passing away with them over his head. In Book 1 we are introduced to Mrs Sparsit as Bounderbys housekeeper but then she starts to make many hints that she has a particular spot for Bounderby that she cannot talk about. She is introduced as this elderly lady that presided over his establishment. Mrs Sparsit speaks of her hardship to Bounderby in the hope that he will understand because he speaks about being so hard done by in the past by his mother. Mrs Sparsit is quite insignificant in the first Book but she placed there because she objects so much to Bounderbys marriage proposal to Louisa. We get many clues that Mrs Sparsit that Mrs Sparsit is fond of Mr Bounderby in more ways than one and we pick up on this because of her reaction to the marriage. In book 1 Mrs Sparsit is the fuel that keeps Bounderbys already huge ego going. Due to all the debts that she was left with Mrs Sparsit is financially dependent on Bounderby, and in her opinion she is his number one woman because she does all the womanly duties around the house. Also Bounderby depends on her for her womanly perspective on female issues. In Book 2, Mrs Sparsit becomes more significant and she is more constant through out the second book. She plays a more active role because she is sent to live in the bank because of the marriage and Mrs Sparsit is quite publicly annoyed so she decides that she is going to call Louisa by her first name and not her marriage name. She has so many objections against this marriage because she can see Louisa being a threat to her number one place in Bounderbys household, also she knows that she could be a better wife than Louisa therefore disagrees with this marriage but she will never get to show Bounderby what a wife she could be because of Louisa. Mrs Sparsit is so desperate to separate Bounderby and Louisa that she drives a wedge between them by commenting on every little detail about Louisa. In Book 2 Mrs Sparsit is sent to live in the bank Dickens relights the whole fact vs. fancy battle that takes place everywhere in the novel, because he says Mrs Sparsit considered herself, in some sort, the Bank fairy then goes on to say Townspeople who in their passing and repassing saw her there, regarded her as the Bank dragon. Dickens has used these examples to imply Mrs Sparsit personality of a spy who watches over Bounderbys household like a dragon would a layer. In this particular part of the novel Mrs Sparsit displays her weakness for spying as she goes and spies on Louisa and Harthouse, she tries to pick up as much information as she can to go back and tell Bounderby of Louisas cheating ways. Harthouse and Mrs Sparsit meet in the bank where she now lives, Harthouse makes spiteful comments to Mrs Sparsit in the hope that she will be more annoyed at Louisa coming in to Bounderbys household and snatching her place away, so it ends up that Louisa and Bounderby get divorced for Harthouse to marry Louisa. Therefore he says to her I presume, that Mr Bounderby the banker does not reside in the edifice which I have the honour of offering this explanation? It seems that Mrs Sparsit was placed in this particular part of the novel because she persistently follows Louisa and Harthouse that she finally ends up pushing Louisa to tell her father how unhappy she is with the marriage. Mrs Sparsit has been given the job of spying on people in the novel because she thinks that nobody would suspect an old housekeeper to be the towns gossiper, so she uses that to her advantage. Dickens has portrayed Mrs Sparsit in this particular way because he wanted Mrs Sparsit to see everybody miserable, as they had done when she was left with her husbands debt. So by her spying and interfering in Louisas marriage and her relationship with Harthouse it is her opportunity to get Bounderby and be happy for once in her life but it does not work out like that for her.
